Also known as human composting, terramation transforms the body into life-giving soil through a natural process that aligns with nature’s rhythms.
The Process
A blend of straw, alfalfa, and sawdust surrounds the body, which gently returns to the earth over 30-40 days. A 30-day resting period follows, producing nutrient-rich soil that families can use or return to The Woodland—a serene natural space.
Ceremony & Personalization
Families may participate in a "Laying In" ceremony, in person or virtually. Personal items, flowers, or letters can be added to the vessel, making this a deeply meaningful experience.

Terramation, also known as Natural Organic Reduction (NOR) or human composting, is a gentle, earth-centered process that transforms the body into nutrient-rich soil. It mirrors the natural cycles of life and provides a meaningful alternative to burial or cremation. We are honored to partner with Return Home, the nation's leading provider of terramation, to offer this service to families in Minnesota now that the process is legally available in our state.
Families are invited to take part in a personalized “Laying In” ceremony, where the body is gently placed into a vessel filled with organic materials such as straw, alfalfa, and sawdust. Loved ones can adorn the vessel with flowers, notes, or mementos, making the experience deeply personal and healing. Over the course of 30 to 40 days, the body undergoes a natural transformation into soil, followed by a 30-day rest period. The resulting soil can be returned to the family or scattered in a dedicated conservation area known as The Woodland.
Terramation offers families a beautiful, sustainable way to say goodbye while giving back to the earth. It honors the dignity of the deceased and provides an intimate, respectful experience for those left behind. This option is especially meaningful for those seeking an environmentally responsible legacy.
