May 28, 1921 - December 13, 2018
Walter Schwarz, age 97, of St. Paul, passed away December 13, 2018. Walter was born in Timisoara, Romania in 1921. He was attending post-secondary school in Brno, Czechoslovakia in 1938 when the Nazis closed schools to Jewish students. He fled back home and convinced his parents that leaving Europe was the only option. They were able to book passage on the last passenger ship out of Genoa before the start of World War II, which brought the family to the United States in 1940. Walter served in the US Army during the war as a member of the Ritchie Boys, an intelligence organization that provided German speaking spies, guides, and interrogators to the war effort. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and helped advance the US interests in post war Czechoslovakia. After the war, he used his GI bill to get a degree from Lowell Institute of Technology (now University of Massachusetts, Lowell). After obtaining his degree his career took him to Vancouver, BC where he met and married Anita Stransky. He spent most of his career in Madison, Wisconsin selling life insurance but it was his love of being around people that made him so successful. Walter retired to Saint Paul in 1988 and has been a member of Mt. Zion since then. He and Anita moved to Sholom home in 2009. Walter will be remembered as a charming man, always quick to joke, always willing to chat, always welcoming. He was generous to a fault. He trusted everyone and expected everyone to be trustworthy. He loved music, especially opera, but he put up with a bit of jazz when it was performed by his grandson. He was loved by all and will be sorely missed. Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anita; and by his parents, Joseph and Bessie Schwarz; his sisters, Hilda (Otto) Morawetz, Joan (Bert) Whitfield and Flora; his brothers, Frank (Renata) and Fritz. He is survived by his children, Daniel (Karen), Sylvia, Ruth, Philip (Cindy), and Mimi; by his grandchildren, Elijah (Christina) Keyes, Jordan Schwarz, Dylan Shamat, and Hani Shamat; and by his great-granddaughters, Morgan and Elaina Pittman-Keyes.
