Dr. Sidney K. Shapiro Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Dr. Sidney K. Shapiro died peacefully at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona, on April 22, 2013. He was born in London, Ontario, Canada in 1921. He graduated at the top of his class from The University of Western Ontario Medical School in 1943. As a medical officer in the Canadian Army during World War ll, he completed his first residency in Psychiatry. When the war ended, Dr. Shapiro, seeking further medical training, became the first Canadian to be accepted to The University of Minnesota Continuation Study Center. This led to his completion of a second specialty in Neurology. He received his Ph.D. in Neurology in 1953 and eventually became a Full Clinical Professor of Neurology in 1966. While maintaining a full clinical practice, Dr. Shapiro continued his affiliation with the University of Minnesota. In 1996, he was granted the title of Clinical Professor of Neurology-Emeritus. When in Minneapolis, Dr. Shapiro participated in clinical teaching at the University. Throughout the years, he published articles on various neurological subjects and served as an examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Shapiro married his wife, the late Ruth Mackoff Shapiro in 1950. Together, they raised three children and became active members of the philanthropic community in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Both Sidney and Ruth came from families that believed strongly in the importance of philanthropy. Together, they established The Shapiro Family Philanthropic Foundation. Throughout the years, they contributed generously to many Jewish, educational, research, and cultural organizations. Dr. Shapiro is survived by his three children, Richard (Kathryn), Jane (Slobodan Popovic) and Peter (Lisa Halperin), seven grandchildren, one great granddaughter, his brother, Dr. Irving Shapiro (Janet), his cherished Kay Litin and her family, honorary son, Steven Kittay, and dear friend, Beverly Grossman. Funeral Service SUNDAY, April 28th at 12:30 PM, TEMPLE ISRAEL, 2324 Emerson Ave. S., MPLS with burial service to follow at Temple Israel Cemetery. Any contributions may be directed to the charity of your choice or to The Ruth Mackoff Shapiro Docent Education Fund at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. SHIVA will take place on Sunday, 7 PM, at the home of Kay Litin, 302 Bridal Lane, Hopkins.
