Dr. Irvin E. Liener Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Dr. Irvin E. Liener, age 94, of St. Paul, U of M Professor Emeritus; one of the world’s leading agricultural biochemists passed away peacefully on November 8, 2013. Preceded in death by wife of 66 years, Dorothy Joan; daughter, Donna Rae; parents, Max & Esther; brother Paul. Survived by daughters, Sally Ann Liener, Wendy Roberta (Douglas) Quammen; grandson, Zachary Alan Quammen; granddaughter, Angela Rose Quammen; sister, Rose Steinman. Dr. Liener received a BS from MIT, served in WWII and attended graduate school at USC. He became involved in research on soybeans because of the military’s interest in using soybeans in Army rations. This research would dominate the rest of his career. Among the many awards which he has received are the Kenneth B. Spencer Award for Outstanding Achievement in Agricultural Chemistry, a Leadership Award from the American Soybean Association, The International Flavors and Fragrances Award for Distinguished Achievement and Service, The Distinguished Service Award from the ACS, a Welcome Visiting Professorship in Nutrition, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fullbright Distinguished Lecturer Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award for Research in Soybeans. He was an ACS tour speaker on six circuits and has given 35 worldwide lectures. He is the author of over 250 papers and author/editor of six books. He also served as editor of The Journal of Agricultural Food and chemistry. In addition, Irvin made time to be a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will live on in the hearts of his family and his research and teachings will continue to benefit society for many years to come Funeral service MONDAY 1 PM, MOUNT ZION TEMPLE, 1300 Summit Avenue, St. Paul.
