Hazel Lorraine Chase

January 27, 1927 - November 22, 2021

Hazel Lorraine Chase, aged 94, peacefully passed away November 22nd. Preceded in death by her parents, William and Sarah Frolichman; husband, Jack Chase; beloved sister, Peggy Kane; and brothers, Marvin and Harold Frolichman. Hazel is survived by daughters, Rae Berman (Carolyn DeLuca), Dede Smith (David); grandchildren, Sarah Berman-Young, Lisa Berman (Joseph Tran), Noah Berman (Rocco Landi), Jaclyn Berdugo (Philippe), Ben Smith; and great-grandchildren, Julian and Leta Young, James, John and Juliet Berdugo; her many loving nieces and nephews; her dear friend and neighbor, Carol Polk. Hazel will be remembered for her kindness, warmth and wisdom as well as for her incredible patience and generosity. Hazel was known throughout the Twin Cities Jewish community as the “knish lady” and spent over 30 years volunteering weekly at Sholom Home East, teaching Jewish women of all ages how to bake her family’s “delicious knishes”. In 2013, Hazel was awarded ‘A Woman of Valor’ by Sholom Home for her dedication and volunteerism. She was also the subject of the documentary, ‘Knish: In Search of Jewish Soul Food’ by documentarian, Laura Silver. Hazel leaves behind a knish dynasty, perfecting her family’s Eastern European recipe and sharing it with the community. Hazel was a popular resident of Riverwood apartments, making friends with everyone and could be found playing Mahjong, Canasta and Bridge with these friends long into her golden years. Hazel enjoyed her many creative activities, needlepoint, knitting, and drawing, but her greatest passion and joy in life was her family: her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she kept in constant contact with through FaceTime, Texting and WhatsApp, reveling in all their accomplishments. Hazel will be sorely missed, but her loving memory, big smile and knish dynasty will continue to live on. Special thank you to Lacey Lundstrom and her caregiver team at Haven Healthcare for their dedicated and loving care. Also want to thank Sholom Home East and the hospice team for their warmth and compassion. Funeral service 1:00 pm, WEDNESDAY, November 24th, TEMPLE OF AARON SYNAGOGUE, 616 S. Mississippi River Blvd., St. Paul. Funeral service will also be available live stream via www.templeofaaron.org. Shiva, in person only, 7:00 pm Wednesday at Temple of Aaron Synagogue. Vaccination and masks required for the funeral and Shiva. Memorials preferred to Sholom Home East or donor's favorite charity.
