Harvey Bernard Winthrop

May 21, 1929 - February 13, 2018

Harvey Bernard Winthrop 5/21/1929 – 2/13/2018 Harvey was born in Duluth Minnesota. He grew up in a home with two brothers and they remained close for the nearly 90 years of his life. Harvey was a Korean War combat veteran. He attended the University of Minnesota and eventually took over Duluth's Ideal Market and Bakery from his parents. Harvey was a devoted husband and father. Harvey was known as the Mayor of 1st Street. He was loved by thousands of Duluthians and was famous for his smile and generosity, both at the Ideal and later at Cooper's Grocery in St. Paul. He was a life-long member of Temple Israel in Duluth and served on the synagogue board and as president of B’Nai Brith. Harvey was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Esther, parents, Mary & George, brother, Sherman, and granddaughter, Talia Joy Castellano. He is survived by many loving people including brother, Edward; sisters-in-law, Barbara Winthrop and Tina Bergstein; brother-in-law, Stanley Calof; children, Pam Lauer (Bill), Marc (Susan) and Robert (Anna); grandchildren, David, Joseph, Jackson, Kaitlyn, Max and Jordan. Funeral service 10:00 a.m. THURSDAY Feb. 15th at BETH JACOB CONGREGATION, 1179 Victoria Curve, Mendota Heights and graveside service 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Tifereth Israel Cemetery, Duluth. Donations can be made to the Talia Fund at the Band of Parents in honor of Harvey www.bandofparents.org. Minyanim during the period of Shiva will be held Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 p.m. at Harvey's home, 2275 Youngman Ave, #305W in St. Paul. In addition, the family will be accepting visitors at Harvey's home during the day Friday, Feb. 16th from 12:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 18th from 11:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m., and at the Lauer home, 137 Street Lane, Apple Valley, on Monday, Feb. 19th and Tuesday, Feb. 20th from 2:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.
