Donald "Donnie" Belzer

April 7, 1931 - March 15, 2021

Donald "Donnie" Belzer, age 89, of St. Louis Park, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2021. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joy Belzer; parents, Ben & Rose Belzer; brother, Mike "Meyer" Belzer; and sisters, Ruth Tolchiner, Mary Sussman and Dorothy Serebrin. Don is survived by his children, Joseph (Susan) Belzer, Linda (Rick) Dworsky and Laurie (David) Levi; grandchildren, Aaron (Mary Dillon), Bryan (Whitney) and Adam Belzer, Dylan Dworsky, Rachel and Ryan (Fares Akremi) Levi; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Coraline Belzer; and devoted girlfriend, Judy Dodd. Don lived his entire life in the Minneapolis area and married Joy, his soul mate, in 1954. She was everything to him. They raised their three children in St. Louis Park. He loved his family fiercely, and took great care of Joy and their children, as well as his oldest siblings in their later years. Even when his children were adults, Don continued looking out for them, always willing to help and eager to spend time together. Don had many close friends over the years. He also had a knack for striking up close bonds with waiters and salespeople, some of whom would come in on their day off if they knew Don was going to be there. Don was a lifelong entrepreneur even from an early age, from opening a Christmas tree lot with a friend when he was in high school to running his own thriving insurance brokerage business for many years. He was a proud veteran, having served with the Air National Guard during the Korean Conflict. Don earned a BA degree from Metropolitan State University. Early on Don had a love of movies and comics. He never quite forgave his sisters for throwing out his childhood comic book collection, but Don remained a giant Superman fan throughout his life. Like Superman, to those who knew him best, he was a man of incredible responsibility, kindness, caring and strength - with a Kryptonite-like weakness for chocolate chip cookies. We will miss him greatly. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Lifesprk at Parkshore in St. Louis Park and the Park Nicollet Hospice team. Memorials preferred to Prostate Cancer Foundation, pcf.org. Zoom funeral service 11:00 am FRIDAY, March 19, 2021. For Zoom link send email to [email protected] SHIVA Saturday at 7:00pm via the same Zoom link.
