July 2, 1935 - May 25, 2020
Bette Ann Bloom, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on May 25, 2020. Born in 1935 to Rose and Harry Spiro, of Chicago, Illinois, Bette Ann grew up in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, where English equestrian lessons at a local stable engendered a life-long love of horses. She attended both the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Roosevelt University in Chicago, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree before becoming a teacher in the Chicago Public School system. Bette Ann met her husband Richard when he was serving in the Army in Chicago. After being married in Chicago, Bette Ann and Richard settled in St. Louis Park, Minnesota and then Golden Valley, where their children Sharon, Jeffrey and James were born and raised. Bette Ann was always involved in helping children learn. She enjoyed time in the outdoors and being immersed in nature, in locations ranging from Wayzata to Bali, Indonesia, Europe, and Australia. She drew appreciation from manifestations of surrounding beauty, especially from flowers, artwork, and interior design. She enjoyed a life-long passion for the arts and maintained memberships in many art, science and history museums and theaters. The sounds of jazz, Chicago blues, classical music and Broadway musical theater provided the soundtrack for the many facets of daily life in the Bloom household. Bette Ann instilled a love of the arts in her children through many visits to theaters as well as galleries and museums in Minnesota and Chicago. She loved entertaining family and many friends at her home. She taught her children the importance of family, and she set an example of never missing a family event, no matter where in the country it was being celebrated. Richard and Bette Ann also maintained enduring commitments to both Temple Israel in Minneapolis and Mt. Zion Temple in St. Paul. Bette Ann is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Richard, her children Sharon (and husband Neal Meropol), Jeffrey, and James (and wife Susan), and her grandchildren Daniel, Hannah, Isabella and Samuel.
